sjcf-sm-conchlogoThe St. John Community Foundation has successfully been carrying out the mission of providing services and supporting programs that positively engage people, build resources and strengthen the St. John community since 1989! We continuously look for ways to fill service gaps and cultivate community assets including people, organizations, programs, and resources to effectively respond to changing needs of the community now and for future generations.

SJCF was formed just after the devastation that hurricane Hugo inflicted on St. John. Back in 1989, few community groups existed on St. John that had the capacity to help an entire community recover from the massive destruction cased by Hugo. Through community commitment toward a common goal, the St. John Community Foundation was born.

Through the years, SJCF has provided numerous programs which have enhanced the lives of the residents of our beautiful island and the visitors who come to enjoy all St. John has to offer. After-school programs, anti-crime initialtives, festivals, senior and youth programs, community facility enhancements, recycling, political forums and community sports and arts programs are just some of the many programs supported by SJCF. More programs are coming-programs which will help every citizen. We hope you will be involved as we move forward in making St. John a model community.

The 25th Anniversary Challenge

Show up. Speak up. Get involved. Give.


Marking milestone anniversary, St. John’s premiere umbrella non-profit challenges all island residents and visitors to show their love.


On the eve of its 25th anniversary, the St. John Foundation is launching a year-long challenge to island residents and visitors: Get involved. The launch of the 25th Anniversary Challenge coincides with the unveiling of the foundation’s new website which provides one-stop access to dozens of St. John programs, services, and community forums. Over the past year, the Foundation has been working to marshal the forces of dozens of island non-profits, government entities, and social service agencies.


“This is an incredible show of support from our community,” says St. John Foundation Executive Director Celia Kalousek, who spearheaded the year-long effort to launch the project. “To see the leaders and members of so many diverse organizations working together with such tremendous cooperation for the greater good of St. John is remarkable—and a real testament to the common love we all share for our island.”


To date, more than 45 organizations—ranging from senior services and after-school programs to environment and the arts—have signed on and the list is growing. By working together, organizations can avoid duplication of services, identify needs and gaps in assistance, and multiply the benefits to island residents. The new website makes it easier for those in need to get help, and for those who want to help to get involved. (donate, volunteer, or just find out what’s going on…)



We partner with and participate with organizations to help them carry out their mission including:

  • United Way’s Project Homeless Connect
  • American Red Cross Disaster Assistance Team
  • Team River Runner’s Wound Warrior Program
  • Gifft Hill School Day of Service and Earth Program
  • Continuum of Care service for the disadvantage
  • American Cancer Society Free Mamogram Program
  • ...and many, many others as we support all good works done in the VI!


SJCF helped instigate, organize and execute many programs that were turned over to capable hands within the community and are now running successfully on their own, including:

  • St. John Children’s Carnival
  • St. John Crime Stoppers
  • St. John Cultural Arts Festival
  • The VI National Park Field Restoration Project


Programs, projects and events that are new or in the planning and development stage include:

  • St. John Community Garden Park (to include an orchard of native fruit trees, a historical walking path with commemorative benches, a labyrinth within a reforestation innitiative and more!
  • Grandparent’s Day Cultural Tea Party (Annual event in September to honor older adults and the island’s rich cultural history)
  • St. John Food and Clothing Bank (offering assistance to individuals, organizations and existing soup kitchens)
  • Cruz Bay Downtown Shuttle (To improve traffic flow, address parking issues and serve local merchants)
  • Sustainable Living Fair (Featuring green living practices and local service providers)


We are invested in the St. John community, our culture, people and environment. We are dedicated to empowering individuals and service organizations to effectively respond to changing needs of the community now and for future generations.
